Just in case you have n’t noticed , spring is late this twelvemonth . I traveled this week to Savannah , Georgia for work , and when I land in Atlanta , it was 45º F. – ten level colder even than Providence , RI , when I left ! So spring seems like it ’s a long style off . While flying over the eastern US , I could see that spring seems to be belatedly most everywhere as everything seemed dark-brown , which is o.k. news for us horticulture types – as an other , or unseasonably fond spring such as last class , can be more detrimental to flora , than a boring , gradual warm - up , as we are experiencing this year . But this cool weather should not hold us back from the necessary chores that demand to be done , and I , in distinctive ‘ Matt modality ’ undertook far too many this weekend .
Even though saltation is arriving a few weeks tardily , there is much to do around the garden . This weekend I struggled with tasks ( there were so many ! ) , and I could not seem to focus on any one thing – trying to take advantage of this belated time of year opportunity to scatter mulch , pitch , prune and pick - up chicken feed before things really go grow . My much arrived Saturday morning , brilliant and early – 8 yards of dark , one - year onetime composted California fern which is what I prefer over the dyed cherry-red form , or even the un - dyed mix . I detest using mulch , but it ’s just something that I have learned to appreciate , as I hate weeding , and ca n’t afford a full time gardener .
To - do lists included sow poppy seeds ( in the end did it today ! ) , sowing light-green onions ( I planted a red - cauline variety ) , and mulching between the raised bed and boxwoods . The big task was trying to add conducting wire fences to the beds and around plants - at - risk so that the puppies wo n’t dig or chew them . The alpine bottom above has bee almost put down ( after a fight over a pearl ) . The dwarf iris have all been erupt , and most of the small bulbs have been beat out . If you have dogs , you know what I mean , there just is n’t much I can do , as this is the side of the yard that is fenced in for the dogs . I do n’t even hump if I will be able to have a vegetable garden this year .

I never have enough sentence to clean up the garden in fourth dimension before everything begins to grow , so I just adjudicate to be realistic , and sharpen on modest portion of the garden ( generally , the parts you see here on this blog – I seldom show the other 75 % of the garden ! – It ’s pretty dumpy . ) .
In the greenhouse , there is always a lot to do this prison term of year . Each week , seeds need to be sown- this week , some late parsley ( I pour simmering water over them to speed - up germination ) , plus some pepper , both live single and of course , some smutty bead . These have been placed under visible light , and on a heating mat to encourage good sprouting . Piper nigrum require soil temperature near 80º for proper germination .
Pelargoniums ( Geraniums ) all set off to acquire with force in former springtime . I keep many miniature and midget material body , scented geranium ( ahh , gamboge ! ) and many rare species – most need to blossom in April , May and June , so this is the time to repot and refresh their ground . geranium are heavy feeders , and the respectable results will do with weekly drenches with a water soluble plant food . The pro utilize Peter ’s 15 - 16 - 17 Peat Lite , which is what I use . The problem is all geraniums are sensitive to SALT and salt buildup in container grown plants is always a problem with commercial crops . One can void this buildup with a bi weekly blush of fresh water . I use suggestion elements , as geranium are susceptible to boron deficiency and I must be careful to not practice the same fertilizer that I use for snapdragon , our citrus trees or petunia , which I augment with smoothing iron – all geraniums are susceptible to iron and manganese perniciousness .

zonary type , which includes many of the types I grow , as I ca n’t help but collect the colored - leafage forms , all require a stiff pH zone of 5.5 to 6.5 , , and anything lower will impress blooming . Careful pinching is all that is needed from April on , as one wants dim , plushy increase , especially with the more difficult types such as the lemon yellow - scented geranium , which I like to train into topiary forms . The trick here is a loamy , sandy soil , a sess three sizes too small , warm temperatures and weekly feeding .
Outside thing , as I said , are slow , but I am not complaining , and a long , boring spring is far better for plants , than one where hot days get in quickly . This is one of those years in which there is a lot of crisscross - over . Late winter flower shrubs , flower at the same time as mid - spring blooming shrubs . Daphne and cornel ’s blooming together , oh my ! Many flora are emerging quickly , where there was snow last weekend , now stands clump of genus Helleborus with their nodding , globular flower head just emerging in the ever - strengthenin spring sunshine .
