June in the front garden
My name is Bill Hodgeman , and I ’ve been gardening on my property in Sunderland , Massachusetts , since 2015 .
My neighbourhood was a swamp for thousands of years , then before it was developed , a lot of clay was bring in from Connecticut . So the flat coat is very alimental , somewhat ill enfeeble , and unmanageable during periods of drouth . I have brought in a lot of compost manure to make the soil more pliable . As a result , things grow very well — often quite a bit larger than advertised ! But I love gardening here .
In June , I try on to work with a unemotional color pallet . The front of my gay borders is predominate by May Nightsalvia(Salvianemorosa‘Mainacht ’ , Zones 4–9 ) , ‘ Walker ’s Low ’ catnip ( Nepeta× faassenii , Zones 4–9 ) andlady ’s mantle(Alchemilla mollis , Zones 3–8 ) this clip of class . Peonies(Paeoniahybrids , Zones 3–8 ) , poppies(Papaverorientale , Zones 3–7 ) , bluestar(Amsonia , Zones 5–8 ) , and baptisia(Baptisia , Zones 3–9 ) provide repeating , contrasting elements . The burden is quite succulent ! You ’ll notice ‘ Diabolo ’ ninebarks(Physocarpus opulifolius‘Diabolo ’ , zone 3–7 ) and Ogon spireas(Spirea thunbergii‘Ogon ’ , Zones 4–8 ) in some of the pictures as well .

The colour from the big mass of purplish ‘ Walker ’s Low ’ catmint is repeat by the darker purpleness May Night salvia and contrast with the brilliant orange poppy .
White Oriental poppies with contrast dark centers .
down in the mouth genus Baptisia and bluestar in the foreground , with the dark farewell of ‘ Diabolo ’ ninebark in the back .

Detail of apeonyblossom porta .
A scandalmongering paeony ( looks like the variety ‘ Bartzella ’ ) with the soft yellow - dark-green flowers of lady ’s mantle .
Spires of May Night salvia in a sea of lady ’s cape .

Ogon spirea has brightyellow - green foliage . Here it counterpoint with the dark foliage of ‘ Diabolo ’ behind it .
Another mass of Ogon spiraea sets off the plants around it .
