Crassula ovata’Gollum ' is one of the first two cultivar comprising the Tolkien Group , named after the character inTolkien ’s legendarium . The other one isCrassula ovata’Hobbit ' . They are monstrous mutations ofCrassula ovata .

Crassula ovata’Gollum ' is an interesting succulentshrubor lowly tree with branches that bear unpaired tubular green leave with flare but blue in the center , often vivid reddened tip . It is smaller than the normal specie , usually growing about 12 inch ( 30 cm ) marvelous . The branches are fleshy gray - green , becoming woody as they mature with scars of the fallen leaves . The leaves are up to 1.4 in ( 3.5 cm ) recollective and 0.7 inches ( 1.8 cm ) large-minded . The color of the leaf varies depending on the time of year and acquire experimental condition .

This cultivar is very similar toCrassula ovata’Hobbit ' , but while the leaves of ' Hobbit ' are rolled back at all edge , take shape a slightly flattened cylinder with a lens - forge pregnant chad just below most leaf tips , the leaves of ' Gollum ' have extremely modified crest with a deep central depression .

The flowers are white or pink , star - shaped , up to 0.6 inch ( 1.5 cm ) across , and come out in summary terminal clusters from mid - winter to early spring .
