After two years in a drastically different climate, a gardener gets into the swing of Florida flowers
Happy Monday GPODers !
While February is the shortest calendar month , for many of us in colder climate it can feel like the month that never ends . The excitement of the New Year has waned , and Baron Snow of Leicester lessen after snow gloaming becomes less like festive weather and more like wordy oeuvre . We experience spring tardily approaching , but that approach can feel like a torturous crawl . However , here onGarden Photo of the Day , the farsighted last stretch of winter can still be fill up with excitement and machination . There is always stake to be find , whether we ’re reminiscing on past color , highlighting the beauty of subdued winter landscapes , or getting a taste of lusher garden from tender climates . Today , we have the latter , with Anne Eshelman show off the coloring and lifetime that can be discover in her garden in Ponte Vedra Beach , Florida . With just two years in Florida after relocating from Michigan , Anne has learned a mass about gardening in this new climate and is love the fruit of this learning process .
proficient morning !

After more than 30 years of gardening in suburban Michigan in zone 6a , we relocate to Ponte Vedra Beach in coastal Jacksonville which is geographical zone 9b . I miss my lush peonies , lilacs , daylilies , iris and lilies of the valley(Convallaria majalis , Zones 3–7).And I have had a lot to learn in the past 2 long time here .
But here ’s what is bloom in my garden in January ! Some do with the house and were planted 20 geezerhood ago , so I do n’t have details . These admit majestic Princess flower(Tibouchina urvilleana , Zones 9–11),white camelia , and many azaleas .
The ace I constitute admit pinkish camellia(Camellia japonica‘Early Autumn ’ , Zones 7–9)(a lavender rose , schematic twofold ) blue plumbago(Plumbagoauriculata , Zones 9–11),roses ( True Bloom ® True Sincerity landscape rose[Rosa‘True Sincerity ’ , Zones 5–10]and Chrysler royal everblooming intercrossed tea rose[R. ‘ Chrysler Imperial ’ , Zones 6–10 ] ) and bluesalvia .

I included butterfly pictures onlantanaI planted even though they have leave town . We had monarchs for about 6 calendar month , until after thanksgiving ! It was fun for my grandchildren to see the real“Very Hungry Caterpillar ” !
I ’m eager to see what will maturate this year and if I can attract more species of butterflies !
First , a stopping point up of the tremendous pink camellia that Anne planted . From her verbal description of “ lavender rose , conventional double blooms ” , I ’m think this is the variety former Wonder ® ( C. japonica‘Early Autumn ’ , Zones 7–9 ) . If I ’m right , these beautiful blooms have been seem in Anne ’s garden since fall , a rare natural event for Japanese camellia .

Next up is a industrial plant that Anna inherited with her young abode , the tropicalPrincess flower(Tibouchina urvilleana , Zones 9–11 ) . Northern gardeners might have enjoyed this flora as an annual , or winter a potted specimen as a houseplant ( it ’s particularly lovely trained and pruned into a tree form ) . But in warm locations it can be originate as a shrub where the evergreen foliation furnish pastime year - pear-shaped .
Lastly , the photograph Anne mentioned of aGulf fritillary(Agraulis vanillae ) butterfly stroke gossip her lantana works . Gulf fritillary are also called the ‘ passionateness butterfly ’ because the passionflower vine is a vital host plant for the specie . However , it looks like Anne ’s bright icteric lantana has caught its aid — meaning it may be a amber lantana ( Lantana depressa , Zones 9–11 ) , which is native to Florida and much loved by butterflies and other pollinators .
Another tone at that beautiful butterfly enjoying the Florida sunshine and the bountifulness Anne has provide . A silkweed might be await them in the background as well !

give thanks you so much for this taste of vividness and warmth from your garden , Anne ! As I look at a weather prognosis backbreaking with snow this week in Connecticut , it is such a dainty to see what is growing on the diametrical end of the east coast , and it ’s a lovely admonisher of the color that wait us in the months to come .
