What more can I say about these fun and cute cucumber molds from Japan that I have n’t say already , except that – yes , my preceding Post on these molding when I first saw them in Japan 5 years ago have been kind of insanely democratic on Pinterest and in social media . More than 2 million hit a year . An image from Japan of these molds is still my most re - pinned image on Pinterest . There is no denying that there are lots of home nurseryman and mommy blogger who adore these molds . I just wonder who has really examine them . It ’s clip to find out how they figure out . chatter below for more :

The awful thing about these heart and soul and star shaped cucumber , are the mold themselves . Difficult to incur and ridiculously expensive if order from Japan ( the ones that be nearly $ 80 US each ) are decent , but the same unity are now found on a few other internet site such asthis one , for as abject as $ 26 . I ca n’t advocate any author , so you will have to take your chance . unexampled designs are do into the marketplace however , so you may just want to try one of those .

In fact , Burpee’snow carries them on their website , but I have not tried them yet . They even carry some design especially for tomatoes . At only $ 14.99 , the price feel more low-cost for the household nurseryman . These look as if they are manufacture by a different ship’s company , but I would ideate that they put to work just as well . I might try those next twelvemonth .

Grow your own heart-shaped cucumbers

I will say that my friend Jess grade mine from Japan in an effort to endeavor to win over me that I had to manufacture and make my own to sell here in the States . But I fight back back articulate something like ‘ Shark Tank would complain us off of the show , telling us that the literal money would be in licence the mold , or licensing the marque out to cultivator , but not selling them . I mean , it ’s not as if every family in North America would demand one , but a couple of good greenhouse cucumber growers might need a few hundred for a novelty token .

I ’ve had my two for a few years now , and since I mostly rise pickling cucumbers ( Kirby types ) , I tried last year , but they really did n’t work that well with these fatter cuke .   This year , I am growing a few seedless and Marketmore - character cucumbers – not ideal for these , as really , they are designed for the long , greenhouse - type of cucumbers , but the mould still run .

After a electric storm this past Monday , I placed the two charge plate plate around a tiny cuke I get hold in the garden ( the cuke needs to be very small , to meet between the two plates . So   1/4 column inch   diameter baby cuke it just about the correct size . Anything bigger , and parts of the mold will touch .

In August , cucumbers grow ridiculously fast , so I do it that in just a couple of 24-hour interval I would have my first hear shaped fruit , as long as it did n’t mould or moulder in the hot sunshine . understandably , these mould are designed for tiny , Japanese gardens on balcony or for use in poly tunnels , and not for handsome , New England backyard gardens . Today , I chequer betimes in the morning , only 2 day later , and the thermionic vacuum tube mildew was full . I did n’t want to risk the cucumber rotting so I pick it .

It looked odd , and it was terribly short ( about 3 inches long , but size is n’t everything ) . The magic happens when you cut the cucumber , which I was more than anxious to do . I rushed into the house , found a paring tongue and some iceberg lettuce to prop a fast photoshoot with . No clock time for fancy greens , but I did have lots of baby tomatoes ( an orangish variety from Johnny ’s called Clementine , which are shaped exactly like Clementine orangeness , and , they are orange ! ) .

I sliced through the center of the cucumber , and surprisingly , it was indeed spunk - mold . Yay ! Cucumbers for breakfast , before I rushed off to solve .
