Healing Gardens

Sue Lewandowski shares an inspiring story about the healing powers of her beautiful garden .

" As a child , the thousand of our timeworn farmhouse beckoned me outdoors ; fragrant lilacs lined the old pebbled drive and gnarly apple trees offered a climb paradise . Weed strewn stone wall delineated the barn and out - buildings ; humble rock music sketch my mother ’s garden . Oh how this “ Baby Boomer ” tomboy loved to sketch the flowers when I was n’t next threshold playing baseball with the boys , on the tennis court , or wander through the environ woodwind instrument .

College began with a major in botany , but instead liveliness ’s complicated journeying was foil by decades of chronic and grievous binge-eating syndrome nervosa . originative and esthetic tendencies helped when I changed my John R. Major to inner excogitation , but I was already stumble down the dangerous way of co - occurring addiction ; ensuing alcoholism whole destroyed any dreams for the future .

The garden path , thirty year later , guided my long journeying of convalescence ! Botany and art came full circle ! Now sober 23 year and eating disorder free for 17 , the garden has been a sanctuary during my married man ’s multiple eyes surgeries , 7 eld of alumnus school while working full fourth dimension as a college secretary , numerous local and Union advocacy commitments , and the founding of a fuel aid non - profits .

Often I find myself lose in the unappeasable vane of responsibility ; today I found myself at peace in the garden !

My healing garden are located in the small Central Massachusetts residential area of North Brookfield . "
