Artist and gardener Syd shares more of her beautiful designs
We ’ve shoot the breeze Syd Carpenter ’s beautiful Philadelphia gardenseveral clip , and I ’m always glad to go back and be inspired by her tart gumption of aim and beautiful industrial plant combinations .
Here , a small - leaved flame nettle cultivar overshadow in a dramatic container . Around the base of the container is a planting ofEpimedium(barrenwort , Zones 5–9 ) . genus Epimedium have beautiful , delicate foliage , and often the raw growth is flushed with bronze . Here , the ruby feeling in the raw leaves counterpoint attractively with the lush putting green of the more fledged foliage . In the foreground , betony ( Stachys officinalis , Zones 4–8 ) puts up spire of pink flowers that complement rather than obscure the scene behind them .
Ferns and hostas are consummate fellow traveller ; both thrive in the same consideration but give contrast textures to the garden . Here they are both complemented by a piece of garden art .

genus Hypericum androsaemum(shrubby St. John ’s wort , zona 5–8 ) has colorful berry that have been popular in the cut of meat flower industry but are just as great to use in the garden . Here it is palisade by Japanese woods pasture ( Hokonechloa macra , Zones 5–9 ) .
White caladium ( Caladiumhybrid , Zones 9–11 or as annual or tender bulb ) are a great fashion to brighten up a sullen , shady area .
Diverse leaf texture set the stage , highlighted by pocket of flush . The flowers are all shades of garden pink to purple , which ties the whole quad together .

This peony ( Paeoniahybrid , Zones 3–8 ) and petunia ( Petunia‘Pretty Much Picasso ’ , yearly ) have very different flowers , but both share almost exactly the same shadiness of Battle of Magenta in their petals , help them work together visually .
A amber - flick haemorrhage heart ( Dicentra spectabilis‘Gold Heart ’ , Zones 3–9 ) is the virtuoso here , the brilliant leave-taking glowing all the brighter for being ring by dark green and majestic flowers .
