You ’ve heard the saying “ once in a gloomy moon , ” which generally intend “ not very often . ” We are induce a low-spirited moonshine on New Year ’s Eve ( in my neck of the Wood it will be full at 2:13 p.m. est ) . profane moon happen whenever we have two full moons in the same calendar month ( does n’t happen often — perchance once or twice a year ) . We had a full moon on December 2 , so on the 31st we will welcome the New Year with a true blue moon .
Right now , we have a bit of snow left traverse the ground after our big snowfall last workweek ; it rained and melted most of it . Last night with the moonshine nearing full and shining down on the snow , it was surd to catch some Z’s since it seemed almost as bright as daytime , except for the aeriform blue flavor of sparkle which the moonbeams smoothen down .

It is in the 20s , so it is very cold out there . rather of gardening , we stay at the task of cutting and stack Sir Henry Joseph Wood and keep the woodstove go . Although it is a lot of study and somewhat messy , there is nothing that warms a body like resist next to a woodstove . And so the chairs nearby the stove are incessantly occupied . When one go up or strike away , another body slides into the vacated space .
powerful now , besides my new holiday reading gifts and music which are stacked alongside my prefer chair , I have begin to amassseed catalog . The companies time it just right , so a identification number of them arrived just the day after Christmas . Now they are trickling in easy — much to my pleasure — since I do n’t have the time to read them all at once . And this allows metre for bask and dreaming . These catalogs are a number of a unguent , help to soothe we gardeners who are have withdrawal from the hired hand - to - earth contact . Being an earth preindication , I lead off to palpate blue by the end of January into February ; I call back of it as a lack of vitamin S(oil ) .
Although I do have a greenhouse ( virtually unwarmed ) and can monkey around in there , it is too early tostart seeds . So I sit by the kitchen stove , with a cup of tea or deoxyephedrine of wine-coloured depending upon what time of Clarence Shepard Day Jr. it is , and inspect the seed catalogs stargaze of my garden to be . I take theFarmers ’ Almanacand theLlewellyn ’s Moon and Sun Signbooks — which I put on my wishlist every year , and this year my daughter Cady got them for me — so I will be cognizant of what to expect and plan for in the upcoming year .

Here is a quote from the2010 Llewellyn ’s Moon Sign Bookthat made me chuckle :
“ source catalogue are responsible for more unrealised illusion than Enron andPenthousecombined . ”—Michael Perry , TRUCK : A Love Story
Soon it will be time to get out the flats and promix ; though not quite yet . The years have to get a bit longer . So I do have one of those large littleAerogrowgardens to incline . I was surprised at the harvest of basil I harvested from it last year during the cold atmospheric condition . I just order a selected batch of seeds instead of one of their pre - package kits , so I could select the herb I need to grow for preparation . It is a countertop unit that sits on my mudroom counter and the grow illumination are on a timer . I find it rather console and it is fun to determine it up , look out the herbs get and issue them fresh to put in the soup pot . I will take pic for you to see the band - up once the seeds arrive .

In the meantime , take the clip to unstrain ; winter is a time to turn inward and reflect upon the season and all that we have to be thankful for . relish the full blue synodic month on New Year ’s Eve . I am celebrating with friends who will build a big bonfire and we are invited to bring dependable things to eat as well as songs , poetry , and melodious legal instrument to partake in . I am taking one of my Christmas natural endowment ; my daughter Lucie gave me abodhran(an Irish frame drum ) which I have been want ever since my stumble to Ireland . Even though I do n’t sleep with how to play it yet , I am sure we can use it to bring in the New Year !
Here ’s wishing you a happy , healthy , and herbal 2010 !
“ Do n’t judge each day by the harvest that you draw , but by the seeds that you plant . ”—Robert Louis Stevenson
