Today ’s photos are from Stefani Bittner in Lafayette , California . I met Stefani when I was in California a few weeks ago , and we had a great talk about her veggie garden . I begged for photos . And here they are ! Stephani says,“My house and garden are cuddle on a hillside surrounded by 100+year - old California oak Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree ( I do a deal of shade gardening ! ) . There are edibles implant throughout the landscape painting and in a dedicated kitchen garden . I grow food year round that flow me and my two lady friend , ten chickens ( I know – unhinged ! ) , and lots of friends and family .
“ Right now we are eating a fortune of braise green , salad green , arugula , peas ( snap , ‘ Golden Snow ’ , and imperial - pod ) , chicories ( my Mom brought back amazing seeds from Italy last summertime and I planted 9 dissimilar varieties this past fall ) , bok choi , beet , purple - sprouting broccoli , mustard greens greens , natural spring onions , and herbs for tea , cooking , etc . The favas were planted as a cover crop but I bed them so much I ’ll probably permit at least half of them make beans .
“ This year I am try on a young variety ( to me ) that has a black noggin . The kitchen garden has herb growing in the seam and talk over the walls that I appropriate to bloom to endure our local pollinators / beneficial insects . The garden has yield trees and efflorescence ( yarrow , roses , California fuchsia , sun camellias , lilacs … ) in the smother beds .
“ The yield trees admit meyer lemon , variegated gamboge , digit lime , turned oranges ( used for marmalade and get as an eatable hedge ) , apricot , pomegranate , 2 pears ( domesticated ) , 2 apple , 3 figs , 2 persimmon . Plus I ’m grow rhubarb , blueberry , strawberries , raspberries , currant , and I just added a pineapple quince and a blanched pomegranate this year .
“ There is also a garden bed consecrate to garlic ( heirloom variety that we get from Paul Wallace at the Seed Bank ) and we produce potatoes in a grow bag for the first sentence this year ( there are photos of the final result on our web log ) . I am determined to get the potato out of the declamatory planting layer ! ”
