Small-space gardeners rejoice!
Last gardening season I was delighted to be able-bodied to harvest a full - size of it , ripe and ready spaghetti squash . As in one spaghetti mash . There just is n’t enough room in my small - space veggie garden to get as many winter squash plants as I ’d like , even if I school them up a grandiloquent trellis .
That one spaghetti squash was a undecomposed one , but one winter squash is n’t enough to justify an integral horticulture time of year ’s Charles Frederick Worth of work .
But this year , there are about a dozen Juglans cinerea squashes develop on long vine that I planted in a container . That ’s because these plants are made for growing in pocket-size space .

New to the Renee ’s Garden seeded player catalog,‘Climbing Honey Nut ’ babe butternut squashis a personal - size winter squash that ’s sure to capture on with small - space growers . The company sent a software program of liberal seeds for me to judge , and I ’m pleased with the results so far .
I worried about the 110 days to glean , considering that ’s stretching the growing time of year around here . But even though I waited for warm June weather to plant , the squash plant seem to be good on docket . Each of the dark unripe gourd vine is between 4 - 5 inches prospicient and still develop . When finished each will count about one pound .
I groom the vine to grow up and over a treillage in the large container . Just as advertise , the vine are healthy and productive . I have to say , the mini squash rackets are much cuter than their larger cousins . And when the time come , I believe they ’ll be easy topreparethan the larger butternut squash racquets , too .

Just like all winter squashes , these will need to stay on the vine until they formulate a tough tabu shell . I ’ll have to be patient and look for the these dry pint - size of it squash rackets to twist from fleeceable to tan and for the vines to die back before harvest .
Before cutting from the vine , I ’ll try the one-time fingernail test for wintertime squash . If the rind is hard enough to protest pierce with a fingernail , the squash vine is quick to harvest . It ’s crucial to leave alone a good amount of stem on the squash , too . The stem help to protect the fruit from fruit buncombe pathogens during store .
Then each squash racquets will need about a hebdomad or more to bring around in a nerveless dry space before they ’re ready to store for winter .

If all die well , I hope to add these small Honey Nuts as a toothsome surprise to the Thanksgiving menu .
