What’s getting me through the snowy season
Today it is me , your GPOD editor , Joseph , jibe in from my very snowy garden in northern Indiana .
Recently , we had a warm sidereal day , some Baron Snow of Leicester dethaw , and I determine mysnowdrops(Galanthuselwesii , Zones 3–8 ) getting quick to blossom . Giddy with excitement , I posted on societal media that spring was follow .
The very next mean solar day we got about 5 column inch of new C . My snowdrop patch now look like this . I like wintertime , I delight snow , but the end of February is always the roughest time of year — when winter seems like it has been going on everlastingly and I do n’t remember what the ground search like . Luckily , I ’ve catch some things indoors that keep me going .

African violetshave been a adult hit with me this winter , and this is one of my favorites . It is n’t a fancy modern hybrid , but ratherSaintpauliagrotei , one of the original wild coinage from Africa that were used to breed the modernhouseplantsof today . I know the simplicity of the blooms and the incredible vigor and profuseness of heyday .
But the enceinte thing maintain me go through the winter is myplant lights . Just some canonical LED shop class illumination and wire shelve from the hardware store , they are a nifty source of common and happiness during the farsighted winter .
It is still a piffling too early to start thing like tomatoes indoors , but I ’ve catch a pile ofperennialsgrowing within , like these auricular appendage primroses ( Primula×pubescens , Zones 4–7 ) . I ’ve got a new , empty garden , so growing perennial like these inside is a trashy style to meet all that space . And it keeps me busybodied !

Growing from seminal fluid is fun because you sometimes get unexpected variation . This particularseedlinghas a silvery coat called “ farina , ” which is typical of some forms of this character of primula .
I ’ve also got lots of aquilegia ( Aquilegiaspp . , Zones 3–9 ) started inwardly . They ’re one of my preferred perennials , so I ’m activated to have lots of them in the garden this year .
And in the end , a pot of tiny English ivy - leaved cyclamen ( Cyclamenhederifolium , Zones 4–8 ) seedling . This is one of my favoriteperennials for shade , but it can be hard to find for sale . So I ’m happy to have a clump of seedlings ! It ’ll be a few old age before they bulk up and show how beautiful they can be , but they already make me smile with every leaf that spread out up .
